Choosing a marketing agency in El Paso shouldn’t feel like a gamble. But for a lot of local business owners, it does. Here’s a story that shaped how we built Rumbo Marketing, and the questions we think every business should ask before signing with any agency, including us.
“As long as it’s not a marketing agency”
When I went to register my business in El Paso, a friend recommended her accountant. He was the kind of person El Paso is known for: warm, direct and ready to help. I showed up early for our noon meeting, introduced myself and told him I wanted to register my company.
His answer: “Great, as long as it’s not a marketing agency.”
I didn’t say anything. He laughed and asked, “Wait, it is marketing?” Then he explained. In the past month alone he had registered several new agencies, and in his experience most of them were in trouble within four or five months. They were great at selling the service. They filmed videos, took photos and ate the food at the restaurants they worked for. But they rarely delivered what they promised, and their clients were left with nothing to show for it.
He told me he no longer recommends marketing agencies to anyone, because they all do the same thing: film a video, post it to Instagram and hope for the best, only for it to disappear in the endless scroll.
Why marketing in El Paso has a trust problem
That conversation stuck with me because it matched what we heard from business owners across El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. The complaints were almost always the same:
- No clear goal. Content gets produced, but nobody defines what success looks like: calls, forms, bookings or sales.
- No tracking. Without call tracking, conversion tracking or analytics, the business can’t tell whether marketing is working.
- Vanity metrics. Reports show likes, views and followers instead of leads and revenue.
- Nothing that lasts. Social posts fade in a day. There’s no investment in SEO, a Google Business Profile or a website that keeps bringing in customers.
- Overpromising. “First page of Google in 30 days” or guaranteed results that no honest agency can promise.
Social media and video absolutely have a place. We produce both. But on their own, without a strategy and without measurement, they’re decoration.
How to choose a marketing agency in El Paso: 7 questions to ask
Whether you work with us or someone else, these questions will help you separate agencies that deliver from agencies that just look busy.
- How will we measure success? A good agency ties its work to leads, calls, bookings or sales, not just impressions.
- What tracking will you set up before spending my money? Look for Google Analytics 4, conversion tracking for calls and forms, and the Meta Pixel if you run Facebook or Instagram ads.
- What’s your plan for Google? Ask how they’ll improve your local SEO and your Google Business Profile, where most local customers find you first.
- Who owns my accounts? Your website, ad accounts and analytics should belong to your business, not the agency.
- What will you do in the first 90 days? You should get a specific plan, not a vague promise.
- Can you work in English and Spanish? In a border market, reaching both audiences can double your opportunities.
- What happens if something isn’t working? The best answer is an honest one: they’ll show you the data and change course.
What we do differently at Rumbo
That conversation with the accountant is part of why Rumbo is built around search and measurable results. We start with the foundation: a fast website, a strong Google Business Profile and local SEO that keeps bringing in customers. When a business needs leads faster, we run Google Ads and Meta Ads with tracking in place from day one. Our video and social content supports that strategy instead of replacing it.
Good marketing goes beyond looking good. It takes analysis, strategy and the willingness to adapt. El Paso businesses deserve agencies that are transparent about what’s working and what isn’t.
